What is the Energy Hub?

Home » About » What is the Energy Hub?

The North East and Yorkshire Energy Hub is at the centre of the region’s ambitious efforts to drive a low-carbon, clean-growth future.

Funded by the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), the Hub is one of five across the country, all focusing on helping the UK reach Net-Zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Our Hub combines six Local Enterprise Partnerships (LEPs) in the region, bringing local authorities, businesses, organisations and communities together to help us achieve our goals.

An Energy Hub Manager and small core team are based in Tees Valley Combined Authority with a Hub funded Energy Project Manager based in each of our six LEPs. The LEPs are driving the transition to a zero carbon economy with ambitious energy strategy and innovative project delivery.

Our aims are to:

  • Increase the number, quality and scale of local energy projects being delivered
  • Raise local awareness of opportunity for, and benefits of, local energy investment
  • Enable local areas to attract private and/or public finance for energy projects
  • Identify working models for teams to be financially self-sustaining

It means we’re busy. We’re busy working with public, private and voluntary organisations to talk about energy to anyone who’ll listen. From Hull and East Yorkshire to Northumberland, the Hub is responsible for:

  • Delivering energy strategy across the region
  • Supporting and accelerating the development of local and regional, low and zero carbon energy projects across 31 local authority boundaries
  • Delivering significant investment programmes such as housing retrofit and public sector decarbonisation
  • Bringing forward business cases that can attract investment in energy infrastructure
  • Sharing best practice across a national programme
  • Developing a pipeline of innovative projects to support the region’s clean growth agenda.

The NEY Energy Hub is one of five Hubs covering the geography of England. Our sister Hubs are based in the Greater South East, South West, Midlands and North West and we work collaboratively to accelerate the delivery of local energy projects across the country.
