A community partnership in Monk Fryston and Hillam, North Yorkshire, featuring enthusiastic leaders of community buildings including the church, church hall, primary school, community centre, cricket club and football club.
What
An independent steering group was formed to develop a community-wide scheme to make all buildings in carbon neutral by 2022. The project hoped to inspire residents – and other nearby rural communities – to adopt more environmental behaviours through the installation of renewable energy systems, sharing best practice, being a trusted source of information.
None of the organisations involved had any energy expertise or money to fund the project so receiving their feasibility grant from the Rural Communities Energy Fund was a fundamental step in delivering on their ambitions.
Why
The project founders are members of the Monk Fryston and Hillam Community Association – a charity committed to social inclusion in the two villages. It wants to create a better community for people to live in.
Impact
The project has widespread community support and has started to deliver real benefits.
The school has invested in new energy efficiency measures through installing a new heating control system and gaining the prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag status.
The Community Association has worn further grants to install solar panels and batteries and is now generating renewable energy. It also bought a Thermal Imaging Camera which will be used to show the benefits of building insulation and has launched a volunteer-led campaign to show the positive effects of energy efficiency.
What next?
The project will continue to deliver energy efficiency in the two villages through sharing best practice and ensuring its campaign messages hit home. It is also researching ways to overcome power connection restriction issues through its work with Northern Powergrid and the National Grid.
